FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE:
ARE THEY REALLY
WHO THEY CLAIM TO BE?
SAN
DIEGO, CA – Pamela F., a 54-year-old divorcee in Long Beach, CA, found out the
hard way that things are not always as they seem. She lost her heart--and
$30,000--to a man who claimed to be a screenwriter but who turned out to be a
convicted con artist, artfully wooing her in cyberspace from state prison. In
Milwaukee, WI, Scott J. met the girl of his dreams online, flew to New York to
see her, then suffered an eye-opening shock. "She told me she was 33; but
she was really 47 and she forgot to mention that she was still married. I was so
disappointed," he lamented. P.S.-- he was also out $649. in airfare, plus.
These two
scenarios are typical of an age-old problem that has become all too commonplace
in our digital age. "Liar, Liar" is a recurring refrain; but often the
truth comes too late. In Detroit, MI, police found the battered body of a young
French woman who had flown to the USA for a romantic weekend with her American
cyber-Casanova.
As we enter the new millennium the Internet is evolving into a major meeting
ground, one that affords us access to people all over the world and draws us
daily into online relationships with individuals we have not yet met. The
concerns—and dangers—of meeting others in this manner are rising
exponentially. So it is no surprise that one new website has already clicked
with hundreds of thousands of netizens: WhoisHe.Com
and WhoisShe.Com.
Playing it Safe
Online
WhoisHe.Com
and WhoisShe.Com
is a professional service designed to verify if
persons are who they purport to be. Are they married? How old are they? Have
they ever used an alias? Do they own property? Do they have any bankruptcies,
liens or judgments against them? Finding the answers to such questions is all in
a day’s work for these professional web sleuths—or is it snoops?
The brainchild of Southern California attorney Linda Alexander, WhoisHe.Com
and WhoisShe.Com is an online company that provides comprehensive background
checks and criminal record searches. According to Alexander, the website has had
over 1.5 million hits in the last year, as many as 15,000 in one hour. People
are swarming to use this service to check out their online loves, dates and
potential mates. But though Alexander reports that the mainstay of inquiries
involve cyber-romance, she says that many seek facts about potential employees,
business partners, nannies, in-home health care workers and tenants--to find out
if they are really who they say they are. The cost of the service provided by WhoisHe.Com
and WhoisShe.Com range from $39 to $75.
In addition to online safety tips, Alexander launched a new section to the
website on January 1, 2000, called Internet
Horror Stories. These will warn of many dangerous situations that have
happened to others who have met online. Readers wishing to contribute an online
story may do so at horrorstories@WhoisHe.Com.
The site will also post success stories and those can be submitted to success@WhoisHe.Com.
The service also assists in tracing lost loves, friends, estranged family
members and old army buddies. Alexander says she is constantly amazed that
everyday brings new reasons why people are using the service. "The concern
for people meeting others in cyberspace is to be smart and safe: to be in
control of their future. To know what they are getting into before they invest
their heart, money, or their life," she sums up. "Information is the
key."
The site’s motto says it all… "when in doubt, check them out"….
